Clue Scrolls

Any kill can drop one, at the same rate everywhere — but which tier turns up depends on what you killed: the weakest monsters hand out easy scrolls, the hardest ones mostly elite, and everything between leans on its own step of the ladder. Hover a minion's name in the collection log to see the tiers it rolls between. A clue is walked one step at a time: you are shown the step you are on, and the scroll only gives up the next one once that is finished. No two steps in a row ask for the same kind of thing. Steps come from all over the game: a monster to kill, logs to chop or burn, targets to pickpocket, implings to catch, crops to harvest, companion drops to claim, or gp to earn from selling. A step that names a monster names one worth your while — an easy scroll sends you at mobs and early bosses, a master scroll at the late ones — and it asks for a number that means about the same errand whichever one it picks, so a raid is a handful of clears where a goblin would be dozens. Every step is something you have to do FRESH from the moment it is revealed — existing kills, logs, harvests and gp never count, and neither does anything you did before the step appeared. You can work on one clue of each tier at once. Abandoning a clue loses its scroll. Master clues never drop: combine one held easy, medium, hard and elite scroll to make one.
